How to Find a Coach to Help You Regulate Your Nervous System in Your Relationship and Your Business
Ooofff, this question. I get some version of it almost every week.
"I need help with my relationship." "I need help with my business." As if these are two different women living two different lives, needing two different fixes.
They're not. (but most coaches only work in one area) Your nervous system doesn't clock out of the boardroom and clock into the bedroom. It's the same body, the same wiring, the same patterns of fawning, over-functioning, freezing and self-abandoning show up whether you're negotiating a contract or negotiating whose turn it is to plan date night.
So let's talk about how to actually find the right support, because this search matters more than most women realize.
Why You're Looking in the Wrong Places
Most coaching out there was built on a male stress response model. Fight or flight, full stop. Except that's not how a woman's nervous system is wired to survive.
Your biology leans toward fawn, built off of estrogen and oxytocin. It has a tendency toward staying in the relationship a little too long and saying yes in the meeting when your whole body said no. That's not a flaw you need to fix. That's a woman's nervous system doing exactly what it evolved to do, because your survival has always been tangled up with connection. (pssst…want to learn more about this, download volume one of my digital magazine The Woman-Led Way here.)
A coach who doesn't understand this will hand you strategy when what you need is safety. They'll give you scripts for boundaries when your body hasn't yet learned it's allowed to have any.
What to Look For in a Coach
Here's your checklist, and I mean an actual one.
She works with the whole ecosystem, not one slice of you. You're a leader, a partner, a mother, a daughter, a friend, sometimes all before 9am. A coach who only talks about your next funnel strategy or only talks about your marriage is going to miss the thread connecting all of it. Look for someone who traces the pattern back to its root, wherever it shows up.
She's trained in trauma, not just trained in "mindset." There's a real difference between a coach who took a weekend certification and one who understands the nervous system at a clinical level. Ask directly about their training. A woman doing this work ethically won't be offended by the question. She'll welcome it.
She talks about the body first. If every session is only cognitive, only talk, only "reframe your thoughts," that's a red flag. Your body holds the answer before your brain catches up. Trust your body, because your body has all the wisdom. A coach worth your time will keep bringing you back there.
She offers support between sessions, not just during them. Real regulation doesn't happen in a sixty minute window once a week. It happens in the moments your nervous system spikes on a Tuesday afternoon and you need somewhere to land. This is why co-regulation between sessions isn't a bonus feature in my own work, it's the differentiator.
She's not building a following, she's building leaders. Watch how a coach talks about her clients. Is she cultivating dependency on her, or is she handing you your own authority back? You want the second one. Always.
Red Flags to Watch For
Anyone selling you polarity as a personality fix. A lot of "divine masculine and feminine" content out there is half-truths dressed up to sell you something. If a coach's whole framework rests on you becoming softer or smaller to be more "feminine," walk away, cuz that’s B.S!
Anyone who treats your relationship and your business as separate problems. If a coach can only speak to one domain, she's going to keep sending you back to the same loop because she's not equipped to see the whole pattern.
Anyone positioning herself as the only source of your growth. Your nervous system needs you to become self-led you do not need a guru. Watch for coaches building isolated followings that push a collective must follow them and their set way instead of inviting you to express your voice and leadership.
What Working Together Can Actually Look Like
In my own practice, women move through four stages: Discover, Decode, Decondition and Devotion. Each one builds nervous system capacity before it asks for behaviour change, because leadership capacity is directly correlated to nervous system capacity. You can't think your way into a calmer relationship or a more sustainable business. You have to build the capacity to hold both.
This is Pull Coaching™, desire-led rather than pressure-led. Growth through safety, not suffering. And it includes real time co-regulation support between sessions, because change happens in your actual life, not only inside a calendar invite.
The Real Question to Ask Yourself
Before you hire anyone, ask this: does she see me as one woman with one nervous system living an entire life, or does she see me as a set of problems to solve separately?
You are not a strategy problem in your business and a communication problem in your relationship. You are a woman whose nervous system has never fully been given permission to feel safe. Find the coach who can see that, and everything else starts to reorganize itself around it.
You were never meant to hold this alone. Lets explore this journey together. Book a Connection Call and understand what a full-body exhale of “she gets me” feels like.
